Adelia Paul, one of our new nurses, highlights the importance of Indigenous health within her professional practice.

Adelia grew up in the Haisla Nation,150-kilometres south of the Nass Valley, and is a part of the Beaver Clan.

She grew up playing basketball and played at the collegiate level. “I play the point-guard position which is to ensure the team is always on the same page,” said Adelia.

Adelia discovered nursing as a career option after recognizing her passion for biology in high school. Seeking basketball at the collegiate level opened an opportunity to pursue and obtain the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Douglas College in New Westminster, BC by 2019.

After graduation, she became a medical/stroke nurse at Royal Columbian Hospital when the global pandemic began. “It was quite the welcoming to the field of nursing,” said Adelia. She assessed, monitored, and treated patients post-stroke to support their recovery.

She then became a Home and Community Care Nurse with the Squamish Nation. Their traditional territory encompasses much of southwestern British Columbia. In her role, the goal is to keep elders safe and independent at home. She also learned a lot about the gaps between Indigenous people and the health care systems.

Adelia began her current nursing role with NVHA with a desire to gain experience with Indigenous health.  She assesses, monitors and treats patients ranging from babies to elders. “I’ll be working with a wide scope of patients compared to my previous role,” said Adelia.

She looks forward to helping patients and supporting the nursing services in the valley. Adelia says “I’m super excited because my passion lies within Indigenous health.”

On top of working, Adelia is also completing her Masters of Science in Nursing through Trinity Western University. Adelia states “I’m currently working with other Indigenous nurses across BC to develop the new Indigenous Health – Nursing Approaches to Wellness led by an Indigenous Nurse Lisa Bourque Bearskin.” Working within NVHA will contribute to her future goals related to the health and well-being of First Nations, Metis and Inuit people.

Outside of work she enjoys paddle boarding, hiking, and spending time with family.
