Process to get benefits for Patient Travel:

  • Obtain confirmation of appointment, and fax to 250-633-2160
    • We do require confirmation of appointments 1 week prior for local travel
    • We do require confirmation of appointments 2 weeks prior for long distance travel
  • Contact NIHB department at 1-888-233-2212
    • Ensure our department has your correct contact information, such as phone number and or email


NVHA Patient Travel Afterhours

When required, we do offer assistance after hours and on weekends, which includes statutory holidays.  Our NIHB After hours on call number is: 250-975-0777.  Please note when calling afterhours, we will ask for a letter of confirmation, this is required for all appointments that NIHB processes.  This can be obtained by a liaison, social worker, nurse, doctor, and emailed or faxed to our department.  We do ask clients to follow up with NIHB on the next business day.


Medical Transportation

This program provides medical transportation to the nearest, most economical health services available.  These services are medically required but are not available in your home community.


What is covered?


There are different modes of transportation that may be required when travelling; we cover the following, when necessary:

  • Mileage for private vehicle
  • Making travel by bus, includes:
    • NVHA Medical Bus
    • Northern Health Connections
    • BC North Bus
  • Air
    • Commercial Flights such as: Air Canada, WestJet, and Coast Mountain Air
      • Please note that you do require valid, government issued, picture ID
    • Taxi
      • Provided in the form of vouchers, to assist clients when needed.


NVHA does provide meal allowances, when eligible:

  • $53.00 per day, when eligible. This is for when overnight accommodations are made by one of our Patient Travel Clerks.
    • $13.00 Breakfast
    • $15.00 Lunch
    • $25.00 Dinner


Our NIHB Department does cover accommodations when medically required.

  • Private Accommodations
  • Hotels, this is done by voucher.

NVHA Medical Bus

Nisga’a Valley Health Authority is proud to offer a medical bus, which is provided for clients that reside in one of our four communities.  To get your name on the bus, clients must contact our office, and submit confirmation of appointments.  Due to a limited amount of seats, we do encourage clients to contact our department, to ensure their name is on bus list, the day before they are schedule for their medical appointments.


What is not covered?

  • Compassionate Travel.
  • Transportation within Village lands
