Over the past five years, Nisga’a Valley Health Authority (NVHA) student kinesiologist David Lee has developed countless health care skills.
David was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved with his family to the Lower Mainland when he was a kid.
“Korea’s rich culture and friendly people made my experience there really positive,” said David.
While learning how to become a cook in Montreal, David got a better understanding of where he wanted to take his career.
“I discovered I wanted to incorporate nutrition and exercise into what I wanted to do as a profession. I was motivated to guide individuals on their journey to physical well-being,” said David.
After deciding to pursue a career in health care, David started the kinesiology degree program at Langara College in 2019. He transferred to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver in his third year and will finish the degree there soon.
David learned the symptoms of pulmonary edema, a lung condition, in one of his classes. Shortly after, he realized his grandfather had one of the symptoms and informed a health care professional.
“He received immediate treatment and recovered from the condition,” said David.
Two years ago, David started his kinesiology practicum with NVHA. With the help and guidance of our health care professionals, David assesses and evaluates the needs of clients, creates personalized exercise programs that caters to their goals, walks them through their assigned exercises, and is their fitness mentor.
David will continue to work for NVHA for the foreseeable future. After graduation, he plans on becoming a clinical exercise physiologist.
In his spare time, David loves cooking various foods – especially sourdough bread—and sketching.
“I love to create sketches of people with unique expressions,” said David.
